I was playing around with Mercedes' online configurator for a little while recently, and I stumbled upon one of the most ridiculously overpriced cars I've seen recently: the CLA45 AMG.

It has a base price of $48,500, which is already a lot of money for a small car with a small engine like this one, but what's even more staggering is the cost after you fully load it with all of the available options, like the one you see above.

A fully-equipped 2015 CLA45 AMG will cost you $77,539 (including $925 destination). In other words, you could buy three Volkswagen Golf GTI hatchbacks and still have money left over.

Here's how the option categories break down:

Exterior: $9,280

Interior: $5,355

Entertainment and Convenience: $4,780

Performance and Safety: $6,010

Service and Care: $2,689

Who agrees with me that this is too much to pay for such a small car? The CLA45 AMG does have 355 horsepower, but an Audi S3 is much better value for money.

Well, if it's way too expensive, then don't max out the options list.

The options list is long because someone will option it that way...but it's not like you're being forced to do it. Sheesh.

Let me guess, it doesn't have a 4.5 what ever?

HOLY FUCK. That's ridiculous.

One time I optioned a Porsche Boxster (non-S) to be over $156,000. I didn't even finish the configurator, because there were so many options.

It has a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. :P

No one will option it that high and the base price is about right for a fast luxury car. People are obviously paying it, I've seen a few of them about.

Not ridiculous at all. $48K for a performance sedan with AWD, 2.0L turbo, and DCT. For reference, the slower, long-in-the-tooth Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution MR (also a performance sedan with AWD, 2.0L turbo, and DCT) has a MSRP of $39K. As for the cost of the options: options are optional, don't get them if you can't afford them.

Nobody can beat the length of a Porsche options list.

IMO this cars base price should be $40k, and fully loaded should not exceed $50k

I agree that's it's a ton of money. But my store has sold loads of them ranging from base well into the $70's. I think the longest we've kept one on the lot was a month, when they first came out before a ton of people knew about them.
